Kevin painting a door

Interesting and unusual garden features

Maybe you have an area in your garden you would like to make more use of, or just have something a little bit different from the mass produced items you can buy from the DIY stores. You may have an ugly wall that needs covering in your garden. You could just paint it, but then it's still a wall. So why not change it to something interesting for you and others to admire.

The first example shows false gate and frame in an area used for breakfast or drinks in the evening. Made from sawn wood and designed to look old and worn out, with a distressed finish to give it an aged look. Much more interesting than sitting next to that plain old wall and it changes the whole look of the area.

Or what about an unusual bench or love seat; hence the heart shape cut out at the back.

Another example is a six metre wall dividing a neighbour's gardens. Originally there was just a pea shingle path between the house and the wall and a few pots. The idea I had was to build a raised flower bed in front of what would eventually give the illusion of a shed, complete with a door and window. Short joist ends along the length with real slate for a roof edge gives an even better effect. The raised beds are planted up with climbers such as clematis, which makes the illusion complete. Somebody once asked, after seeing the completed work, "What do you keep in the shed". The reply was "We don't, there is a one inch gap and then a wall behind it".

The timber used, was sawn (rough) timber. It was decided that it would not be painted or stained, but left untreated, so over time the wood would discolour naturally to a silvery grey colour. The window required cracked glass, again to give the appearance of an old shed. To do this I used Perspex for safety, cut the corners out and cracked the Perspex.
